I got a new flash for Christmas, but I never did much with my previous one. In fact, I’ve sort of avoided having much to do with it. While I was tempted to return the flash, I decided to take on the challenge of learning to use it well.
Oh good!!!! Let’s practice flash together! First stop is the Strobist.com lighting 101. Have you tried it? Everything I know, I learned from David Hobby.
Thanks for the suggestion, Jessica. For now, I’ll stick with the van Niekerk book (and my flash manuals). I seldom hesitate to buy books, but always hesitate to enroll in a class. : }
Ha! I know the feeling but actually it’s not a class just a series of blogposts on his site –and they are free. There is 101 and the next level up 102… : )
So far, I’m enjoying the Valenzuela book. It’s filled with exercises designed to train the photographer’s eye to look for pattern, balance, lines, symmetry, etc. I’ve already noticed a difference in the way I’m composing shots.

You’re right. It is free! I didn’t notice that when I was looking the other day. I’ll have to spend more time at the site.
Oh, and what do you think of the Valenzuela book? He had a great show on creative live last year that they sometimes re-run.
