Synthesis
The Call: Early Spring in the Backyard — Jessica
Gregory was standing next to me today when I sat down to think of a call. So I asked him for a word. “Photosynthesis” was his original choice but I cut it down to synthesis. I was thinking along the lines of thesis-antithesis-synthesis…but then that sounded to pseudo-y intellectual, you know?
But I have been thinking about how to make sense of these icm/me pictures. I think my more successful ones the same elements as any good picture: color, form, line, composition. But to get them to that point requires a synthesis of all that I have learned over the last years. Or it’s just dumb random luck. I sit and look at the unsuccessful ones, trying to determine what doesn’t work. Sometimes it’s obvious and sometimes not so much. And with the successful ones? There doesn’t seem to be any formula – but to my mind, color seems to be the common element.
I’m so happy with today’s image that I’m going to put it on Flickr. This will be a first for the icm/me images.
You should be happy with this shot! It’s fantastic. All I can think is Monet (but I don’t think his yellows were ever that vibrant).
I agree about the elements that make a good image, whether it’s a straight-up photo, a painting, or an ME/ICM image. I’m having fun playing with camera angles and using what would traditionally be considered outside the frame in the frame. For example, the light yellow, squared-off shapes in this image, http://www.sienafallsmedia.com/callandresponse/ambiguity-2/, come from the white blinds in my studio that were showing above the canvas and were bisected by the center post of my easel.
