Oh boy! THIS is going to be a challenging month. Joe McNally helped me figure out how to get my flash off the camera and as I work my way back through his book again, I’m picking up more details but, oh my, this light stuff just isn’t always so intuitive.
So here is my first attempt — my starting point. There are many flaws (including shadows on the background) but it can only get better, right?
I decided to also pull back and take a shot of the set up to help me remember what I did. I was crouched behind the tripod and held the camera at desk level.
The white cardboard is directly across from a window and is acting as a “fill light.” The background probably should have been moved further away in an attempt to get rid of the shadow that the flash was creating, but I was working in pretty tight quarters and couldn’t really get it far enough back. Maybe I should have used a diffuser on the flash. Don’t have one of those at the moment.
So, off we go! Here’s to the adventure ahead!
Well, it looks great to me! I do notice a very faint shadow but only because I was looking, but that’s what’s Photoshop’s for, right! 😉
Thanks for helping to jump start our rainbow!!
Very true — and I was sorely tempted to clone it out, but I resisted! ; )
I love the still life, Jessica. Those pinks are so soft. The shadow isn’t terribly noticeable. I think the photo works quite well, and I’m looking forward to the tips on using flash that I’m sure I’ll pick up from you.
It’s nice to see books in the background of your “photo studio.” I don’t like houses without books.
Thanks, Cheryl. You’d love our house then — we are practically drowning in
books! : )

I agree with you on the flash stuff. Not as simple as it might seem, but it looks like you are well on your way!!
Keep at it!!
