Well, as I type this it is finally raining a bit outside. That’s all so far. I think (I hope) we live far enough inland that we won’t get too much excitement from Irene. The main problem will be that we have a lot of old trees and even a little bit of wind usually causes branches to fall onto power lines somewhere knocking our power out. Bleh! I hate that. I really NEED my electricity, you know?
My older kids’ school has already canceled classes on Monday — unless conditions have improved. It all seems a bit too hyped to me.
Looking for Inspiration
I’ve been thinking about what I would do next for the 365. I’d like to challenge myself in another area that I haven’t really explored and was starting to narrow it down to street photography. Or as close as I can get while firmly entrenched in the suburbs –no gritty urban snaps of decay and decadence… : ) It will probably end up being more like “photography in public places” than what would be called “street.”
At any rate, I had the wonderful experience of finding several resources just fall into my lap! First up was this excellent overview on Mortal Muses – Getting Started with Street Photography, by Gilly of The Camera Points Both Ways (an excellent photo blog — if you need another photo blog to read!!)
Gilly referenced a free e-book, Going Candid by Thomas Leuther, that proved to be very valuable. I’m not sure I agree 100% with his approach of surprising people but I definitely learned some very good tips. Well worth a read!
Sounds like an interesting project. I’ll look forward to seeing them!
They’ve been so quick to cancel everything..even before the storm actually hit!! And – I’m inspired by your wanting to try street photography. Go for it!!!
Hope all you get is rain and nothing worse!! Thanks for the reading material tips 🙂 I am SO shy about taking photos of others in public places. My “get pushed” assignment is to shoot “outside, looking in” and I thought of a couple cute cafe’s to shoot people but I was tackled by security and told NO PHOTOS. Even tried going to our local mall – tackled again – NO PHOTOS! The mall I can understand, you see, someone burned most of it down a year ago and maybe they though I was a terrorist gathering info to finish the job – HA!
Be safe!
Love that image and thanks for stopping by my interview over at Marcie’s, you’re such a sweetheart.
