Is it possible to have a photo-heart connection with a photo that I don’t even remember taking?
As I worked through the shots from March, I found plenty that brought fond memories of times with the kids, crazy March weather, fun photo experimentations and so on. But it was this one that I kept coming back to.
I love the composition of the curves, gently repeating and rippling out like water on a pond. The color is lovely and the lighting is well-exposed and captured. But it’s the tactileness of the photo that really draws me in. I can see the details of the fabric and almost feel its hand.
I’ve been using the diagonals for composition purposes for a while now. This photo is composed along the secondary diagonal: that is, the one running from the top right corner to the bottom left corner. It is supposedly softer and less intense than the primary diagonal because it leads the eye up and out of the photo. In this case though, I think the curves and folds of the fabric bring your eye right back down again.
I could be wrong. This eye-leading stuff can be pretty subjective but I do find it interesting to look at and figure your way through.
Thanks, Kat for helping me to make this monthly practice. It’s amazing what you can learn about your photography by simply reviewing it from time to time.
I really feel like I can reach out and touch this. It is very tactile.

I love that you don’t even remember taking your Photo-Heart Connection! My thoughts on this phenomena: Your heart was directing you as you took this shot – your head was never involved. I love the tactileness of this too. My eye moves from top right to lower left as well, follow the light and the curves. As I looked at it, my “It’s all lines and light” mantra popped into my head. So true!! Thanks for sharing in the Photo-Heart Connection this month.
I wanted to reach through the screen and touch as well when looking at this – a beautifully composed image – but one that cries our ‘texture, touch me!’ as well.
Beautiful folds and lighting and texture of the material.
