A Six-Week Live Study · Thursdays This Fall

Under Mary’s Mantle · The Feminine Soul

Your vocation is to say Yes to the Messiah with Mary.

At heart, this is the role of the Christian. Single, married, divorced, or widowed, we imitate Mary who brings forth the Messiah. Often there are obstacles and barriers we could not imagine. But God has called us.

Under Mary’s Mantle: The Feminine Soul, a six-week live study with Genevieve Kineke. The Visitation, from a twelfth-century Aquitaine psalter.

“When we meditate on the path of the Mother of God, from Candlemas to Good Friday, we will find therein a path to inner serenity.”

St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross

The ancient truths of the Catholic faith are still true.

Ask a room of Catholic women who is holy, and an uncomfortable silence will ensue.

That reaction points to an essential humility that is still a part of our Church today. We do know we ought not boast about the gifts of God. But what if you are enduring a season of suffering? What if you fear that your paltry faith is just not up to the challenges you face? What if your silence is imposed by fear or sorrow?

Mary shows us the way to find a comfortable silence. A silence in which pondering is expected. A silence that recognizes the seeds that will grow if we nurture them. Mary perfectly embodies the feminine vocation, and calls us to build the virtues that will last.

Over six weeks, we are going to take our place at Mary’s hearth and learn from her. She is meek and humble of heart, but still, her vocation requires a courageous heart and an inquiring mind. With the self-discipline of virtue, we will learn how to be obedient to the prompting of the Holy Spirit as she was.

The six sessions

Each session runs about an hour: teaching, Scripture, and real discussion. You will not be lectured at for sixty minutes.

1

What is the Feminine Soul?

An introduction to God’s great love for creation and the divine image we bear.

  • Nature and Grace
  • Body and Soul
  • The Effects of Sin
2

The Church as the Bride of Christ

The Holy Spirit offers a loving relationship with Jesus Christ, the Bridegroom of our souls.

  • The many ways to see the Church
  • The Church foreshadowed in the Old Testament
  • The Maternal Church as channel of grace
3

Mary as the Perfect Image of the Church

“Mary conceived Jesus in her heart before she conceived Him in her womb,” said St. Augustine.

  • Mary’s fiat untouched by sin
  • The Virgin brings forth the Messiah
  • Mercy and the Sun of Justice
4

Finding Your Feminine Genius

God created you with special gifts that will come to fruition under the mantle of Mary.

  • Every woman called to spiritual maternity
  • The Church is the model
  • Love like the Church: mirroring the Sacraments
5

The Refusal to Love

Every woman has been wounded by love, and yet the Church offers a profound path of healing.

  • Sin causes wounds and then masks them
  • A practical guide to forgiveness
  • Loving without fear
6

“I Thirst”: The World Needs Mothers

The collapse of the family and a media-driven culture have shredded authentic relationships. Motherhood is the answer.

  • Your spiritual maternity will be utterly unique and irreplaceable
  • The love you offer is not your own, but bears the imprint of your heart
  • God has called you now, and will provide all you need to bear grace to the world

Who this is for

This is for you if

  • You have raised your children, and nobody prepared you for the question of what comes next.
  • You are single, widowed, or without children, and you want to understand what spiritual maternity means.
  • You wanted children you did not have, and the word mother still catches in your throat.
  • You are intelligent and you would like to be taught something, not soothed.
  • You have the intention of a serious interior life and a real gap between that and your week.

This is probably not for you if

  • You are looking for a book to read on your own schedule. This is a live cohort with a start date and other women in it.
  • You want a self-esteem course. The Church’s account of woman is more demanding than that, and we are going to follow it where it goes.
  • You would rather not be asked to speak. Discussion is most of the value here.
